“The internet has created the greatest generation gap since the advent of rock and roll.”
Growing Up Online
This PBS documentary examines the private worlds that kids are creating online. It’s a documentary well worth watching and one that will undoubtedly prompt discussion. If you only have time to watch one chapter, then watch Chapter 2: A Revolution in Classrooms and Social Life. The entire documentary is posted online at: Frontline. They also include a teacher’s guide with lesson plans.
As much as I enjoy new technology, I have to admit that I struggle to understand that when students post images, feelings or thoughts online, for the world to read, how they still consider that space to be private. The generation gap also shows through when we define the word “friend”.
